About

About Me

I knew from an early age that I was going to make a difference in the lives of others, but was not sure in what form.  I obtained my Bachelors of Science and teaching certification in Physical Education with an Endorsement in Health from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.  After college, it became clear that counseling was a profession that would be the best fit to share my passion for helping others.  I obtained my Masters in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX.  Ready to start my career in counseling, I made the move to Phoenix, AZ to work at an inpatient treatment center for eating disorders as a therapist and body image specialist.

I have worked in the field of counseling since 2001 and my specialities lie in the areas of eating disorders, body image, OCD, BDD and phobias.  My other counseling experience includes: anxiety, depression, family systems, grief and loss, identity, self esteem, trauma and spiritual integration.  I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults in many settings including inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, university and private practice. In utilizing my background in teaching, I have also served as an adjunct instructor teaching in a graduate counseling program as well as writing articles and speaking on the topics of body image and eating disorders.

I also have a special place in my heart for Africa and I hope to do more service work there in the future.  I am married and we have a black lab, Walter.  I enjoy the outdoors and connecting with others.

I am licensed in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.  I offer both in-person and tele-health therapy.

Treatment

Specializing in Eating Disorders, Body Image, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Phobias, and Anxiety Disorder Treatments:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Looking at thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and related to one another to understand unwanted behavioral patterns and mood disturbances.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

To increase psychological flexibility by using mindfulness, one's values, and actions that are in line with those values.  Contains six principles that help with accepting thoughts without putting meaning to them, giving space to feelings and urges, mindfulness and ground, observing vs. judging, identifying values and then taking action based on those values.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Teaches that what appears to be two opposing ideas can exist at the same time (BOTH/AND) and teaches skills to help with mindfulness, tolerating distress, emotion regulation, communication, and boundary setting.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Used to treat fears, phobias, body image, OCD, and BDD by exposing one to their fears without engaging in an avoidance or compulsive behavior to help the brain to learn the difference between perceived and actual danger and/or reality; helps to increase flexibility, and reduce the flight, fight or freeze responses.

Mindfulness

Focuses on being present and aware of the here and now by using one's senses to observe what is happening around them without judgement and practicing drawing the mind back to the present when it drifts to the past or future.

Self Compassion

Learning to treat ourselves with the same kindness we would a good friend by utilizing components of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness to respond towards oneself during suffering, failures, and inadequacies.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

A structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, light bar, hand pulses, pulses through headphones) to aid the brain in briefly focusing or processing through distressful and traumatic memories so it can reprocess those memories in a desensitized or a non-reactive state.

Inference CBT (I-CBT)

Inference CBT (I-CBT) is an evidence based cognitive approach that is used for OCD and BDD, which targets obsessional doubts, faulty reasoning processes and fears about who a person might become called the vulnerable self theme (VST), which leads to confusion about what is real and what is imaginal.  Focus is on trusting one's inner and outer senses in the here and now, correcting faulty reasoning processes and dismissing doubt.
